The Royal PMX Parachute is a high-floating attractor dry fly designed to imitate a variety of large terrestrial and aquatic insects rather than a single species. Its bright Royal-style body segments, buoyant para-post wing, and spiky hackle suggest the shape and motion of stoneflies, grasshoppers, beetles, and oversized mayflies. The parachute hackle helps it sit lower and more naturally on the water while maintaining excellent visibility for the angler. Because of its flashy body and durable, high-floating design, the Royal PMX Parachute excels in fast currents, pocket water, and turbulent runs where trout look for big meals drifting overhead.
History
The PMX (Parachute Madam X) lineage evolved from the original Madam X, a versatile attractor pattern created in the 1980s by Doug Swisher. The PMX variation added a parachute post, softer hackle style, and sometimes more refined segmentation, transforming the pattern into a more natural-riding and highly visible dry fly. Incorporating the classic “Royal” coloration—red floss, peacock herl, and bright accents—gave rise to the Royal PMX Parachute, which combines the fish-calling flash of traditional Royal patterns with the versatility of modern attractor designs. Over the years, it has earned a reputation as a dependable Western trout pattern, especially in fast water and during mixed-hatch conditions when fish respond best to bold, hybrid imitators.
