Olive PMX

The Olive PMX is a versatile attractor dry fly designed to imitate a wide range of aquatic and terrestrial insects rather than a single species. Its olive body closely resembles mayflies, particularly olive-colored baetis and other small olive mayflies, while its bushy hackle and buoyant deer hair wing allow it to float high on the water. The fly's profile can also suggest caddisflies, hoppers, and other insects that trout commonly feed on near the surface. Because of its lifelike silhouette and excellent visibility, anglers often fish the Olive PMX as a searching pattern when they are unsure exactly what trout are eating, and it can also serve as the dry fly in a dry-dropper rig.

History:

The PMX pattern was created in the late 1970s by renowned fly tier and guide Randall Kaufmann of Oregon. Kaufmann developed the fly as an improvement on the traditional Royal Wulff, combining the buoyancy of a hair-wing dry fly with a slimmer, more natural-looking body that better matched the insects found on Western rivers. The name "PMX" is commonly interpreted as standing for "Parachute Madam X," reflecting the pattern's relationship to the Madam X style of flies, although the original design is not a true parachute fly. Since its introduction, the PMX has become a staple in fly boxes across North America, with the olive version remaining one of the most popular colors because of its ability to imitate numerous natural insects throughout the fishing season.
