The March Brown dry fly imitates Rhithrogena species—large, early-season mayflies with brownish-tan bodies and mottled wings. These mayflies hatch from March to May, and this fly matches their dun stage as they emerge on the surface.
History:
The March Brown is one of the oldest named fly patterns, originating in the British Isles and later adapted by American anglers. In the U.S., it’s especially effective in Eastern and Midwestern streams and became a staple in Catskill-style tying. It’s typically tied in sizes 10–14 and is one of the first major mayfly hatches of the season.
