Griffith’s Gnat imitates a cluster of adult midges on the water’s surface. When midges gather and mate, they often appear as a small black or gray clump—exactly the profile this fly mimics with its peacock herl body and grizzly hackle.
History:
Created by George Griffith, one of the founders of Trout Unlimited, in the 1960s, this pattern quickly became a favorite on technical waters. It’s deadly in tailwaters, spring creeks, and calm pools when trout are delicately sipping tiny insects. Usually tied in sizes 18–24, it's one of the most effective micro-patterns ever designed.
