The Conehead Woolly Bugger is one of the most versatile streamers in fly fishing. The black variation is especially effective because it imitates a wide range of aquatic life—leeches, baitfish, crayfish, and even large nymphs. The addition of the conehead gives the fly extra weight, helping it sink quickly and producing a jigging, darting action when retrieved. Black is a top choice in low light, stained water, or when fish are feeding on darker prey.
History
The original Woolly Bugger was developed in the late 1960s by Pennsylvania tier Russell Blessing as a leech imitation. It quickly gained a reputation for catching nearly every species of fish. The conehead version was a later adaptation in the 1980s–90s, popularized as anglers sought a deeper-diving, more animated version of the classic. The black conehead Woolly Bugger remains one of the most universally productive streamers in both freshwater and saltwater, often recommended as a first choice when exploring new waters.
