The Clouser Minnow is a streamer-style fly designed to imitate small baitfish. The pink-and-white variation is especially effective in both saltwater and freshwater, where the pink adds a flash of attraction and the white belly mimics the natural look of a fleeing minnow. Tied with dumbbell eyes, it rides hook-point up, which reduces snags and gives the fly a jigging, dart-like motion. This version is popular for targeting species like striped bass, snook, redfish, smallmouth bass, and even trout in waters where baitfish are abundant.
History
The Clouser Minnow was created in the late 1980s by Pennsylvania fly tier and guide Bob Clouser, originally for smallmouth bass on the Susquehanna River. Soon after, legendary angler Lefty Kreh helped popularize the fly, proving its effectiveness worldwide. While chartreuse-and-white is the most iconic color combination, pink-and-white quickly became a favorite in saltwater fisheries and in stained freshwater, where added visibility helps draw strikes. Today, it’s considered one of the most effective baitfish patterns ever designed.
