Caddis Varient, Dark

This pattern imitates adult dark-bodied caddisflies, such as those in the Hydropsyche genus. Its dark brown or black body and swept-back wing simulate the natural fluttering profile of caddisflies on the surface.

History:
The “variant” style—with exaggerated hackle and bushy design—originated in the Catskills and was adapted for caddisflies. The dark variant is particularly effective in fast-moving water where visibility and movement are critical. It gained popularity in the mid-20th century as anglers began tying more impressionistic caddis patterns.
