The Blue Quill dry fly imitates the Paraleptophlebia adoptiva—a small, dark-bodied mayfly commonly found in Eastern and Midwestern U.S. streams in early spring. It features a dark, bluish-gray body and dun-colored upright wings, closely resembling the natural insect in its dun stage. This fly is effective from late March through May, particularly in cold, clear streams with strong mayfly populations.

History:
The Blue Quill has its roots in North American fly tying, emerging as a specific response to early spring hatches of the Paraleptophlebia genus. It became widely used by Eastern anglers in the early to mid-20th century and remains a seasonal favorite. Its design echoes the British Blue Dun but with coloration and proportions fine-tuned to imitate North American species. It’s often tied on smaller hooks (sizes 16–20) and is a must-have during early season outings when little else is hatching.
