The Zug Bug is a general attractor nymph that imitates a range of aquatic insects, especially caddis pupae, mayfly nymphs, and even dragonfly nymphs in stillwater. The peacock herl body, soft hackle, and iridescent flash make it look “buggy” and lively in the water. With a beadhead, it sinks quickly to reach the strike zone in faster currents.
History:
Created in the 1930s by Cliff Zug of Pennsylvania, the Zug Bug became a popular fly in the Northeast before spreading nationwide. Originally tied with a pheasant tail and peacock herl body, it was a favorite on the Lehigh River. The beadhead version emerged later as nymphing techniques evolved, helping the pattern stay relevant in modern fly boxes. It’s especially effective in turbulent water or as the dropper in a dry-dropper rig.
